BPCA scoops award for social media excellence

Last night, at the Trade Association Forum’s awards evening, BPCA won the Best Practice Award for Social Media 2018.

The awards evening, now in its 16th year, was held at the historic Draper’s Hall in London.

Prestigious awards

The Best Practice Awards were created by the Trade Association Forum (TAF) to recognise, reward and promote best practice amongst trade associations in the UK.

The award is supported by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, who sits on the independent judging panel.

BPCA Marketing and Communication, Ben Massey, was at the ceremony and picked up the award on behalf of the BPCA team. He said:

We’re delighted the new approach we’ve taken with social media engagement has been recognised in the trade association world. It’s a measure of staff buying into the activity, and members supporting and sharing the messages.

Increasing member engagement

The social media award marks one of the many steps BPCA is taking to engage more with our members and stakeholders.

Content and Communications Officer, Scott Johnstone, said:

Creating engaging posts for a 76-year-old trade association can seem daunting, but actually, it’s just a matter of reflecting the tone of our members. We go for a straight-talking, playful tone without being stodgy. We can be professional without being boring. Social media is meant to be fun.

Engagement in social media activity across BPCA’s platforms has increased steadily over the last few years.

In the first quarter of 2016, BPCA posts were averaging five interactions per post. By the last quarter of 2018, Facebook and Twitter posts were averaging 39 interactions per post. Scott said:

“The increase in engagements is probably more down to the type of thing we’re sharing. We’re sharing our own articles from the new website and PPC magazine. We’re sharing our member’s stories. We’re sharing what’s happening across the industry and in the media – all with our own values weaved in.”

“In turn, our members are sharing and retweeting our posts, and even more people get a chance to interact with us.”

“So, thank you to our members, followers and friends who’ve been helping to spread the word!”

In 2017, BPCA won another TAF Best Practice Award for PPC magazine, and Marketing and Communications Manager, Ben Massey was named young marketing executive of the year at the MemCom Awards.
